Genealogical Proof Standard

While the Genealogical Proof Standard was originally designed for professional researchers, I believe it’s something every family history enthusiast should embrace. Especially in today’s digital age, where we’re sharing our family stories online, following a rigorous research approach isn’t just for experts – it’s for anyone who wants to tell their family’s story with integrity and accuracy.

The five elements to follow in order to meet the proof standard are:

  1. Reasonably exhaustive research has been conducted.
  2. Complete and accurate source citation.
  3. The evidence is reliable and has been thoroughly correlated and interpreted.
  4. Any contradictory evidence has been resolved.
  5. The conclusion has been soundly reasoned and coherently written based on the strongest evidence.

Any ‘proven’ statement is subject to re-evaluation if/when new evidence arises.

Website Blog

I keep a record of all my research and sources for anything I do share here on LINKSINLANCASHIRE.CO.UK to back up the proof standard, and to provide as evidence should it ever be necessary.

My blog posts weave together in-depth historical research and personal insight. While I’m committed to presenting factual information from reliable sources, I also believe that understanding history isn’t just about dates and documents – it’s about connecting with the human stories behind them. Each narrative reflects both meticulous research and my genuine emotional response to the subject.

I’m always eager to hear different perspectives and engage in meaningful conversations about the narratives I share. If something resonates with you or sparks a thought, I’d love to hear from you. This website is more than just a collection of articles – it’s a space to connect over a shared interest in local, social and family history.

“If you don’t recount your family history, it will be lost. Honor your own stories and tell them too. The tales may not seem very important, but they are what binds families and what makes each of us who we are.” – Madeleine L’Engle

A further note from the website Author

Being a passionate history enthusiast, I’ve always felt that our family’s stories are treasures meant to be cherished and shared and that research shouldn’t just sit in folders, or be hidden away on our Ancestry accounts. That’s why I created this website. I want to do more than just list names and dates; I want to breathe life into our family stories and connect with other relatives who are just as interested in our shared history.

Along the way I have learnt the importance of patience. Every successful family historian, or professional genealogist started somewhere and needed guidance from others. When I started out two decades ago, I sometimes encountered dismissive responses from experienced researchers that initially dampened my enthusiasm and slowed my progress. Those early interactions taught me the importance of kindness and understanding towards others who reach out for help.

And so, I welcome contact from anybody that may be struggling with a brick wall. Don’t let genealogical roadblocks discourage you – reach out, and I’ll do my best to help.

Best wishes on your family history journey,

F.
