A horrifying tale of unfortunate amputation

Jonathan Marsden

Preston Chronicle – Saturday 13 August 1881

On Saturday night, Jonathan Marsden, Landlord of the Railway Hotel, Heapey walked home from Chorley along the line of the railway, whilst in a state of inebriety. When about half the distance he fell, and was stunned, or fell asleep, and lay there for some time, with his right arm across one of the rails. During the night a train passed, and the arm was completely amputated below the elbow and was found the next day. Marsden afterwards walked home and was surgically attended.
