An Undutiful Son

John George Taylor

Preston Herald – Wednesday 14 August 1889

John George Taylor, who did not put in an appearance, was summoned at the instance of his father, Henry Taylor, residing at Longton, for committing willful damage and also with using threats. On the 5th inst the defendant came home and asked for his fathers gun. His father was absent, and the then occupants of the house did not permit him to get the gun. This apparently angered him, and he took up an axe and broke some valuable pieces or furniture. When his father informed him that proceedings would be instituted against him he threatened to take his fathers life, “even if he had to hang for it”. – The Bench adjourned the case, the defendant to be apprehended on a warrant.

John George Taylor, a man about 34 years age, was brought up at the Leyland Police-court on Wednesday, charged, under a warrant, with threatening to stab his father, who resides at Longton, in September last. The execution of the warrant against the prisoner had previously been stayed at the father’s request, who had no wish to prosecute so long as his son conducted himself properly. At the last court-day the father applied for the warrant to be executed in consequence of his son’s misbehavior. Prisoner was ordered to find sureties, himself £50 and two others of £25 each, to keep the peace for six months, or a month’s imprisonment in default. A further charge of drunkenness the previous day was also preferred against him, and for this offence he was committed to gaol for 14 days. The prisoner was unable to find sureties in the previous case, so that he will have six weeks to reflect upon whilst under the magistrates’ orders
